The Angling Trust CAST Awards

Within 2 hours I’ll take you through the basics step by step, and by the end of the session, you’ll be fishing independently using a short pole or whip.

During the session, I’ll guide you through:

  • Where to fish – understanding the water and simple watercraft tips
  • Setting up your rig – building a simple rig and plumbing the depth correctly

  • Choosing and presenting bait – selecting the right bait and learning how to hook it
  • Reading bites – recognising bites and learning when and how to strike
  • Playing and landing fish – safely playing, landing and controlling your fish
  • Fish care – handling, unhooking and carefully returning your fish safely

By the end of the session, you’ll have the confidence and practical skills to set up, catch and safely return fish independently

You can choose if you want to fish a whip, short pole, long pole, method feeder, feeder or float !

I will build the session around your specific needs or fish you wish to target. 

For silver fish we would use either a whip or short pole catching roach, rudd, perch and tench.

If carp are your quarry we would use a short or long pole or method

On the method we would concentrate on loading the feeder correctly, casting accurately and using the line clip properly. 

Each venue holds different stocks of fish so we have plenty of options available to catch a variety of fish.

The CAST awards are a structured set of lessons that include the following: 

 Level 1  

  • Introduction to coarse fishing and what to expect

  • Basic tackle overview (rod, reel, line, float, hook)
  • Simple rig setup explained and assembled
  • Basic bait selection and how to bait a hook
  • Casting and float control
  • Recognising bites & striking
  • Safe landing, handling, unhooking, and returning fish

Level 2 

  • Different bait types and when to use them
  • Watercraft basics: choosing a swim, where to fish, reading the water, which depth to fish and when
  • Understanding how the weather affects fishing 
  • Playing, landing, and handling fish correctly

Level 3 

  • Knots & different types of line
  • Different float types and shotting patterns
  • Feeder rigs in detail
  • Hook lengths, elastics, and rigs
  • Casting accurately 

How to target specific species: carp, roach, rudd, bream, perch, tench
